Vitamin C, (also known as Ascorbic Acid) is a water soluble vitamin that is used by the metabolism in many important ways. It helps activates numerous enzymes, has an important role in cell respiration, and offers protection against stress. It assists in the absorption of iron, and, together with folic acid and vitamin B12, stimulates red blood cell production. It helps support the functioning of the nervous system, and it participates in the structural formation of  bone, blood vessels, connective tissue and collagen. It is also an excellent anti-oxidant, helping to protect cells against damage caused by free radicals.

There are some situations in life, when vitamin C supplementation may be advisable. C 1000 and C 500 provides extra high potency vitamin C, while C PLUS is for those preferring complex formulas. In the CaliVita range of products, you can find many kinds of vitamin C so choose the one that is most suitable for your age and health condition.

Vitamin C is water soluble and insoluble in fat, so the body cannot store the permanent need, and we have to take him from external sources. The most known deficiency of this vitamin in the body is the disease called scurvy.

Vitamin C is found in the body where vital processes take place: the liver, adrenal glands, pituitary glands etc. Vitamin C plays the role of regulation and purification. Increases resistance to cold, accelerates wound healing, prevent sunburn (by activating cellular respiration and defense system). James Lind and Szent Gyorgy are those who have shown that vitamin C increases the ability of red blood cells to fix the oxygen from the air and transport in cells.

Other than the aforementioned functions, metabolic demand for Vitamin C may be increased by such things as physical activity, smoking, drinking, lack of rest, illness, or medications. As Vitamin C is water soluble, it is not stored in the body, but passes out of the metabolism relatively quickly. CaliVita® Vitamin C products are formulated for timed-release, continuous absorption, thereby ensuring sustained bioavailability.

In advanced formulas such as C Plus, Vitamin C is combined with bioflavonoids (sometimes referred to as Vitamin P) which promote absorption and utilization.. Together with vitamin C, bioflavanoids help provide nutritional support for a healthy circulatory system.

Vitamin C iis also necessary for the functioning of the nervous system, it participates in the formation of the structure of the connective tissues, and hereby helps preserve the integrity of skin, gums, bones and cartilage. Since Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) belongs to the group of water soluble vitamins, it may  be emptied from the body quickly. In  up-to-date formulas – like for example C Plus – vitamin C is complemented by bioflavonoids which promote its  absorption. These are often mentioned as vitamin P. Human body is unable to produce bioflavonoids, so they must be ingested with food. Together with  vitamin C, they guard and protect the  inner structure of capillaries; they have circulation stimulating effects. This group of compounds is often used in case of sports injuries as well.

During sickness the level of the vitamin drops by half - the use of antibiotics decreases its level in the body even more - which weakens the immune system. Vitamin C is especially valued for its anti-inflammatory functions, which makes it comparable to anti-cancer and anti-flu vaccination.

Factfiles: Over 10 tablets of C500/C1000 per day together with Garlic Caps can stop common infections such as colds.

“I haven’t heard about a disease which wouldn’t be caused by hypoxia” – says a well-known biochemist and Nobel Prize winner Otto Wartburg.

Sometimes we can find vitamin C mixed with other ingredients. One of them might be rose hips or bioflavonoids which are assisting in the utilization of vitamin C in our body. One of such a products available at the market in Europe is Vitamin C 300 PLUS.

Due to its high rose hip content, added bioflavonoid complex and the continuous absorption (time-released) formula, C300 Plus with Rose Hips and Bioflavonoids excels among the simple vitamin C formulas.

The multiple effects of vitamin C are well known to most of us. In addition to vitamin C, C 300 Plus with Rose Hips and Bioflavonoids contains citrus bioflavonoid complex which promotes absorption and utilization as well as ground rose hips too. The ground rose hips not only give a great odour to the tablets but it is also one of the most known and the longest used vitamin C sources in traditional medicine.

To certain groups of people it may be advisable to pay extra attention to an adequate vitamin C intake. Such are for example athletes and physical workers, smokers, and people living in cities, those leading a stressful life and the elderly. We should not forget about pregnant and nursing mothers, whose relative vitamin demands are higher than that of average people.

C 300 Plus with Rose Hips and Bioflavonoids is a continuous absorption (time-released) formula, which means that due to the special technology, active ingredients are released continuously from the tablet and consequently they remain available to the body for a long time. This technology enables better utilization of the active ingredients and prevents them from being present in the body in excessive amounts at the same time.

Lion Kids C - Solution for children's healthy development

We can never start living a healthy way of life early enough. A strong, healthy child performs better at school, both physically and mentally Do not make compromises when the development and health of you children is at stake! Give them the best you can! Children readily accept the animal-shaped chewable tablets, so their administration is easy.

The very rapid physiological and mental development of children means they have crucial nutritional requirements. An abundant and well-balanced diet of quality food can provide this nutrition, but sometimes there are factors at work which may result in a less than optimum supply of the vital minerals and vitamins kids need at this important stage of their life.

At times of reduced parental supervision, such as at school, after school activities, or visiting friends, a child may have a propensity to eat foods which provide poor nutrition such as candy, snacks, junk food, and soft drinks. Then there is the modern prevalence of fast and convenience foods, which may save the parents some time, but may not be as nutritious as a meal prepared at home from scratch.

Even for home-cooked meals, what parent hasn’t experienced  a small child’s reluctance to eat his or her greens and vegetables? Moreover, over-processing, long periods of storage, and long-distance shipping means many of the ingredients we may use in our cooking do not contain the same level of quality nutrients as years ago.

calivita-vitamin-c-label   For these reasons, many parents use dietary supplements to ensure their children are getting all the nutrients they need for proper development. A strong, healthy child performs better at school, both mentally and physically. Lion Kids is an up-to-date formulation containing a complete spectrum of quality vitamins and minerals to help support optimum development of your child. The Lion Kids family includes a version with extra Vitamin C, and a version with extra Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an important role in the development of healthy bones and teeth, and also participates in the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus.

All of this can be found in a great tasting, chewable, animal-shaped tablet, that your child will enjoy taking - Lion Kids C.

Liquid C + Bioflavonoids

Liquid C + Bioflavonoids with Rose Hips is not only one of the many new kinds of vitamin C formulas, but a complex antioxidant formula, whose active ingredients excellently help preserve our health as well as maintain our general well-being. Owing to the liquid form it may be ideal for those too who do not like tablet and capsule forms.

Who doesn’t know about the several roles vitamin C plays in the functioning of our body? During the compilation of this product, main goal was the exploitation of the beneficial effects of vitamin C. To achieve this, CaliVita resorted many substances supporting vitamin C.
Such “helpmates” are the well-known bioflavonoids, which besides their powerful antioxidant properties play an essential role in the absorption and utilization of vitamin C in the body, as well as rose hip extract, which is one of the most well-known natural vitamin C sources.

Both rutin and hesperidin in the product have a strong antioxidant effect and not only protect Vitamin C but may work sinergically with it, helping the immune system to function properly plus also fight against free radicals that can damage our cells. Now we can find all these effective ingredients in a pleasant tasting liquid product, the consumption of which may be enjoyable for every member of the family. For sweetening and flavoring the product, CaliVita did not add sugar or artificial sweeteners but bio agave (Agave americana) nectar, and fresh lemon.

Fortunately, the incidence of scurvy, the classic deficiency disease of vitamin C is not characteristic in developed countries. However, it is worth noting that the demand for vitamin C by the body in most people is still higher than actual ingested amounts. It may be important for those who do not consume sufficient amounts of fresh sources of vitamin C, such as fresh fruits and vegetables or those who follow a rigid diet. Furthermore, there are several other already considered to be natural phenomena in our accelerated world, which may also increase our vitamin C demand. These are for example, pregnancy or ace sports, but frequently negative factors of way of life as well, like smoking, city air rich in smog or certain drugs (such as aspirin and contraceptives) and stress.

Studies over Vitamin C intake

Even people in perfectly good health may not be getting enough vitamin C. More and more of them is vitamin C and vitamin D deficient or have suboptimal levels in their body — which could place them at increased risk for chronic health problems. Those who were vitamin C deficient were also more likely to have larger waists, greater body mass, and higher blood pressure.

The study’s author, Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy, suggested eating fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and peppers, or taking supplements. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) in nonsmoking adults is 90 mg per day for men and 75 mg for women, though some experts say a minimum daily dose of 120 to 200 mg is more appropriate, and some routinely take much higher doses themselves. Research also shows that people suffering from various diseases may benefit from larger amounts. In the case of the common cold, a review of published trials found that amounts of 2 grams per day appear to be more effective than 1 gram.

But there is a big difference between oral vitamin C and intravenous C. One maintains your health. The other seems to directly attack pathogens and cancer cells. Vitamin C taken orally will not do this, because the concentration does not seem sufficient to accomplish the task.

Vitamin C is a cofactor in at least eight enzymatic reactions including several collagen synthesis reactions that, when dysfunctional, cause the most severe symptoms of scurvy.

These reactions are especially important in wound-healing and in preventing bleeding from capillaries. Ascorbate may also act as an antioxidant against oxidative stress.

Vitamin C may contribute to decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and strokes through a small reduction in systolic blood pressure, and was also found to both increase ascorbic acid levels and reduce levels of resistin serum, another likely determinant of oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk.

Vitamin C is found in high concentrations in immune cells, and is consumed quickly during infections.

Vitamin C is water soluble, with dietary excesses not absorbed, and excesses in the blood rapidly excreted in the urine.

Natural Vitamin C from natural sources

Natural vitamin C is superior to synthetic. In spring, increased ultraviolet radiation stimulates the thyroid to increase metabolism by 15-20%, this requires additional consumption of vitamin C. This is the so-called spring fatigue. We have to consume more vitamins and minerals as usual. Vitamin C enhances the formation of antibodies and phagocytes activity, which protects the body against infection. In cellular respiration, vitamin C acts in parallel with vitamin B and fixes the Iron in the body.

Oxygen in the air destroys vitamin C. When not part of biochemical complex, oxygen combines with vitamin C and consume. Therefore we must be careful in preparing food (juice, salads); they will not be long in contact with air. Freezing at low temperatures not affects vitamin C, but after thawing food must be consumed immediately, as freezing cells crack. Tobacco is also a factor which destroys vitamin C. It blocks O2 uptake by hemoglobin in the blood.

Natural sources of vitamin C can be found in many types of fruits. R ichest fruit sources of vitamin C are: rosehip, hawthorn, sea buckthorn, jojoba, green and yellow kiwi, black currant, guava, strawberries, oranges, lemons, papaya, grapefruit, tamarillo, mango, tangerine, raspberry. Vitamin C is found in appreciable amounts in parsley, broccoli, tomatoes, and potatoes.

Even though Vitamin C is present in all of these fruits studies suggest to supply our body with few additional mg of Vitamin C through tablets/liquids if consumed levels of this vitamin are too low.

In a nutshell:

"Vitamin C" is the most widely taken nutritional supplement which keeps our body healthy.
